According to the Chairman, Technical committee of the competition, Babatunde Popoola, the events featuring teams from Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Imo, Edo, Delta, Rivers and Kwara state will used as national team selection for the Olympics qualifiers for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
He also explained that “We were supposed to hold this competition in February which was always used to celebrate Honorable Ochei’s birthday, but due to circumstances beyond our control, the event could not hold as planned because of the political happenings in the country during the period.
Speaking further, Popoola who also doubles as the national president of the basketball Referees association of Nigeria explained that the reduced numbers of teams was because during the 1st 2nd and 3rd editions, invitations were extended to teams from Ghana, Togo, Benin Republic, but this year, it was just restricted to Nigeria.
The 4th Honorable Victor Ochei international wheelchair basketball competition today tipped off at the Indoor sports of the National stadium with eight states participating in the male and female categories of the 2015 edition.
The organisers revealed that the winner of the 2015 edition in the men category will cart home a sum of 1.5million naira, 2nd will pocket 1,000,000,while the 3rd placed team will go home with 750,000 thousand naira.
In the women category which will be in a 3×3 format and not a full court game, the winner will be given 500,000 naira, 2nd will settle for 300,000 and the 3rd prize will smile home with 200,000.
The competition is expected to end on Saturday, 17th of October, 2015
