Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital came alive as drummers from 20 African countries and many states of the federation participate in the third edition of the African Drum festival which is set to hold from 19th till 22nd of April 2018.
The festival, introduced by Governor Ibikunle Amosun-led administration in 2016, is aimed at showcasing Africa’s drum culture. Last year’s edition attracted 14 African countries.
The festival started as The Nigerian Drum Festival in 2016, later became African Drum Festival during the Second edition in 2017, with new aim of educating and impacting knowledge with workshop and conference.
The honourable commissioner of Tourism, Ogun State, Hon. Muyiwa Oladapo says that the drum festival is not just about Jamboree,but to revive our culture.
“I appreciate the hard work of the state government for putting in place the festival to bring together the African culture, and the festival had brought improvement that will enhance the development of the state economy”, said Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II.
The Alake and paramount ruler of Egba Land, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, in his speech encouraged the drum festival and make known the importance of drum and drumming in the African societies. Also, he advised indigenous languages should be encouraged.

Legendary Singer, King Sunny Ade is amongst the artistes, whose instruments and costumes, have been put on display at the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Phoenix, America. Gbedu magazine reveals that a special corner has been dedicated to the iconic Juju musician, in the museum, where his guitar and famous costume are currently being exhibited. The Musical Instrument Museum is famous for displaying at least 16,000 instruments of great artistes and countries from across the globe. Also on display in the museum are some traditional instruments from Nigeria. Other famous artistes whose instruments are displayed at the museum include The Beatles, Stradivarius , Taylor Swift. King Sunny Ade, who turns 70 later this month, was recently honoured with an award of excellence as an honorary citizen and goodwill ambassador of the city of Houston. This honour was given as part of activities organised to celebrate the music legend ahead of his 70th birthday.
