The governorship and House of Assembly elections has recorded casualities as a serving lawmaker in the House of Representatives, Hon. Temitope Olatoye (a.k.a. Sugar), died on Saturday evening at the Intensive Care Unit of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, following bullet wounds he suffered in the head by suspected political thugs in Lalupon area, in Ibadan city, Oyo state.
The family of Honourable Temitope Olatoye, known as Sugar, a member of the House of Representatives, who was killed recently in Oyo state, has opened up saying his murder was politically motivated.
Sugar was killed on his way to Ibadan during the governorship election.
Premium Times reports that Olajide Olatoye, a brother of the late lawmaker, who spoke on Tuesday, March, 12, said the murder of Sugar must be properly investigated.
Olatoye spoke in reaction to the statement credited to the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of police, zone II, Leye Oyebade, and the commissioner of Oyo state command of the law enforcement agency, Shina Olukolu.
The police officers had reportedly said Sugar’s killing was not politically motivated. They described it as a case of murder.
“With due respect, I think that incident has a political undertone at the time Sugar was killed. Did Sugar go to Oja’ba to buy yam? Or did he go to Bodija to buy beans?
It was during election, and he was coming back from where he went to perform his civic responsibility as a good citizen of this country and as a federal legislator.
“His killing has much importance to his political murderers. I am debunking the statement with due respect, made by the police AIG that his killing was not politically motivated. I want to say categorically that Sugar was the breadwinner of this Olatoye family and they have taken him away.
“What is now our gain? If this incident is not curbed, they will still do it to (kill) other members of the family,” Olatoye said while, however, commending the police for their efforts concerning the case
Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Monday, March 11, announced the arrest of one person suspected to be involved in the killing of Oyo lawmaker, Honourable Temitope Olatoye.
The speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, also mourned the death of Olatoye Temitope, who represented Lagelu/Akinyele federal constituency of Oyo state.
Olatoye, who won the 2015 election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, lost reelection two weeks ago under the platform of the Action Democratic Party and vowed never to return to the APC, notwithstanding the overtures reportedly made to him by a former governor of the state, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, to join him in aligning with the APC candidate, Chief Adebayo Adelabu.
The lawmaker, who is a member of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), had contested in the February 23, 2019 national assembly poll for the Oyo State senatorial district seat, but lost to Teslim Folarin of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
