A member of the team, Austin who shared the report on Instagram disclosed that the Nigerian amputee football team were on their way to Abuja to get their visa to Mexico for the forthcoming World Cup. He added that no life was lost and serious injury was recorded in the accident.
“We (Nigerian Amputee football team) had accident on our way to Abuja to get our visa to Mexico for d forthcoming World Cup in Mexico 24th of ds month…. Join us in thanking Almighty God for sparing our lives . Thanks to Nigerian who came to our rescue.
No serious injuries , just few bruises !!!! We r still stranded, n we haven’t even gotten to Abj yet!!! Buh I believe we gonna pull tru”
According to the captain of the Nigerian team, Goodluck Obieze, he and his colleagues were rescued by military personnel that mounted roadblocks and helped them out of the bush.
The Embassy of Mexico in Nigeria invited the team for their visa appointment.
The team left their camp at the Teslim Balogun Stadium on Monday to meet the appointment scheduled for Abuja on Tuesday.
The 2018 Amputee Football World Cup begins next week in Mexican cities of San Juan and Guadalajara.
Making it to the World Cup has been a tortuous journey for the team who have appealed to the public for financial support.
